Storage

Energy storage technologies are being developed rapidly across the world. In addition to supply-side flexibility and demand response, they will contribute significantly to the flexibility of the power system and, as a result, to security of supply. The growing integration of distributed, variable renewable energy will stimulate the development of large-scale energy storage, i.e. methods to store electrical energy on a national scale within the power grid.

Widely used conventional systems (such as hydroelectric energy storage) are expected to be complemented by advanced energy storage systems that store energy in batteries in chemical form.

This will also encourage decentralised small-scale energy storage performed by a variety of grid-connected industrial, household and other consumers.
